RBNA Charities

The RBNA administers a number of charities for sick and disabled nurses.
These are:

      • The Trained Nurses Annuity Fund
      • The Ethel Mary Fletcher Fund
      • The Helena Benevolent Fund
      • The Settlement Fund

To qualify for assistance, applicants must be trained nurses who have completed at least three years' post-graduate work. Referrals are received from Care of the Elderly, Age Concern, Citizen Advice Bureau, Anchor Care and Repair Benefit Agency, other nursing organisations and SSAFA. Advertisements are placed in selected magazines and some free papers. The Helena Benevolent Fund is exclusively for the benefit of members of the Association.

An assessment is made according to the applicant's financial situation. Quarterly meetings are held and the Executive Committee makes the final decision on their suitability for an annuity. When an annuity has been guaranteed it is sent direct to the individual and not to any agency. Annuity payments are made twice yearly in July and December. In December a Christmas bonus is paid. Recipients are required to acknowledge payments by sending a receipt to the office and to inform the Secretary if their financial situation has improved. In certain circumstances, a one-off grant may be sanctioned by the Executive Committee.

The charities exist to help nurses in sickness or straitened circumstances in the United Kingdom and abroad, therefore grants are not available for further education.

It is most rewarding to receive letters of appreciation. Some folks are able to have a holiday. Two people received an annuity from age 60 till their 100th birthdays. Following a cataract operation we sent a card to one of them which she was able to read (unfortunately, she died two weeks after her hundredth birthday).
